ABOUT THE BOOK

The Amazing Octopus

Coral reefs are beautiful and enchanting places in the ocean where life abounds. Scientists say that they are home to over a million species of plants and animals. That’s why it’s important to preserve and protect them.

All kinds of really cool fish swim in a coral reef. There are parrotfish and butterflyfish, angelfish and clownfish, lionfish and rabbitfish. There are reef sharks and wrasses, seahorses and sand divers, eels and gobies, barracudas and tangs. (Go fish!) You get the idea.

Many other fascinating creatures live in and around a reef: lobsters, urchins, sea jellies, crabs, anemones, sea turtles, dolphins, and more. But the most fascinating of all may be
(drum roll, please) the octopus! (O, yeah.)

The common octopus can grow to be over three feet long, and it can weigh more than twenty pounds. You probably know that it has eight arms with suction cups. But did you
know that it has lots of brains, three hearts, blue blood, and no bones? Pretty cool, huh?

It also has a parrot-shaped beak for a mouth.

All octopuses are cool. (They’re cold-blooded, after all.) But there was one octopus that was
more than just cool. He was, well, amazing. Some of his fellow sea creatures even made
up nicknames for him. They called him The Entertainer, The Magician, and The Legend.
